We all know that travel can be expensive, even when you’re trying to keep costs low. But with a bit of flexibility and creativity, it is possible to plan an amazing vacation that doesn’t break the bank. We’ve been traveling for decades in Europe and the USA, so today we’re sharing a few of our favorite ways to save money on travel.
1. Travel During Off-Peak Season
Traveling during off-peak seasons is one of the best ways to save money on travel. You will also be missing the crowds which is another huge advantage in addition to enjoying lower prices on flights, accommodations, and possibly even tourist attractions. While this might not be an option if you have school-aged children, there are still options to take advantage on off-season pricing. For example, visiting Florida during the summertime can shave a hefty chunk off your travel costs. Yes, it’s the rainy, hot and sticky season – but saving upwards of 50% on your hotel or RV campground stay makes it worth it.
2. Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates
If you have some flexibility in your travel dates, use fare comparison websites like Google Flights or SkyScanner if you are looking to fly or stay in hotels. Being open to mid-week departures or overnight flights can lead to significant travel savings. Also, keep in mind holidays and special events which can drive expenses up significantly. Setting price alerts for our favorite destinations on several price-comparison websites has also been helpful.
3. Research Budget-Friendly Accommodations
Consider alternative lodging options such as hostels, guesthouses, or vacation rentals through platforms like Airbnb or VRBO. These can be much more affordable than traditional hotels, and you’ll often have the chance to interact with locals. You do have to be careful though as Airbnb and other platforms can levy hefty cleaning and additional charges so longer stays are often more practical. If traveling by RV, try finding campgrounds at nearby state parks rather than in the middle of all the action. This can cut costs tremendously.
4. Embrace Public Transportation
Using public transportation is not only budget-friendly but also an excellent way to experience a destination like a local. Skip expensive taxis and opt for buses, trams, or subways to get around if you’re in a fitting city. Sadly, many American cities don’t have a very good public transportation network. Depending on the situation, renting a small car for the day might be a cheaper option or consider bikes or e-scooters. Just make sure you to take into all factors when choosing your mode of transportation. In some big cities, parking fees might sneak up on you.
5. Prepare Your Own Meals
Eating out every meal can quickly drain your budget. Save money on travel by shopping at local markets and cooking your own meals whenever possible. If you are staying at a hotel, book a room with a kitchenette. The added cost of the room will be quickly off-set by savings in food and you have a place to leave drinks and snacks for the family. That’s one reason we love exploring the US in our travel trailer: our fridge and kitchen go wherever we go. (We also always have a clean bathroom nearby!)
6. Use Travel Apps and Loyalty Programs
Take advantage of travel apps and loyalty programs to save money on travel including gas, flights, accommodations, and activities. Many airlines and hotels offer rewards programs just for being a loyal shopper that can lead to significant savings over time. Another great options for savings is utilizing a credit card that provides rewards for your favorite method of travel or cash back.
7. Pack Lightly
Packing only the essentials will help you avoid baggage fees and make your travels costs more manageable. Most airlines charge for checked bags, so stick to carry-on luggage and you’ll also time by skipping baggage claim. In an RV, although you have more room, think about where you’re going and what you’ll really need. We use packing cubes and storage totes to help keep our travel gear organized.
8. Explore Free and Low-Cost Attractions
Research your destination for free or low-cost attractions, such as museums, parks, and historical sites. Many cities offer free walking tours, providing an excellent opportunity to learn about the local culture without spending a dime. Visit the local tourism website or Chamber of Commerce to get insider tips and sometimes also discounts.
9. Travel with a Group
Consider traveling with friends or family to share expenses like accommodations and transportation. Or look for group excursions vs private guided tours when you arrive at places to save money on travel excursions. Group travel like a shared bus or boat tour is not only cost-effective but can definitely enhance your overall travel experience.
10. Exchange Currency Wisely
Avoid currency exchange kiosks at airports and tourist areas, as they often have high fees and poor exchange rates. Instead, withdraw cash from ATMs at local banks for better rates.
11. Plan Travel in Advance
Sometimes, the longer you book in advance, the better price you will receive — especially when it comes to flights. For RV campgrounds, it may also be to your advantage if you’re trying to book in sought after locations like Florida in the winter.
These are just a few of the many ways you can save money on travel without sacrificing the quality of your experience. Remember, the journey itself is as valuable as the destination, so embrace the adventure and make the most of every moment while keeping your finances in check.
