Chasing the Eclipse: 2024 Solar Eclipse Camping Guide

As the moon prepares to cast its shadow across the Earth, creating a breathtaking solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the anticipation builds among astronomy enthusiasts and adventurers alike. This celestial event presents a unique opportunity for RV travelers to combine their love for the open road with the awe-inspiring experience of a total solar eclipse. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know to plan your RV journey to witness this spectacular phenomenon, from the best viewing locations to essential travel tips.

Choosing Your 2024 Solar Eclipse Camping Location

The path of totality for the April 8, 2024, solar eclipse will cross North America, providing several prime viewing spots across different states. The key to selecting the perfect location is to consider factors such as weather prospects, accessibility, and how crowded an area might be. States like Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, and New York are among the lucky ones to be in the path of totality. You can learn all about exactly which areas will be in the path of totality on NASA’s eclipse page.

If you don’t have the opportunity to be in the path of totality (where complete darkness will be experienced) there will still be opportunities to see a partial eclipse from other parts of the United States.

Once you know where you might want to catch a glimpse, sites like Campendium and Google Maps can help you find the perfect campground. Research parks, campgrounds, and RV sites within these areas that offer clear, unobstructed views of the sky. While many places along the Eclipses path are putting up public viewing areas, viewing the April 8 eclipse is as easy as grabbing a solid pair of “eclipse glasses” and looking at the sky.

A word of caution: hotel rooms, campgrounds, and other lodging have been a hot commodity for the past several months. If you haven’t booked a location to park your rig yet, you absolutely should look for something now.

2024 Solar Eclipse Camping & Travel Tips

  • Plan and Book Early – The demand for campsites and RV parks in the path of totality is already skyrocketing. Secure your spot as early as possible to avoid missing out on the best locations.
  • Prepare for All Weather Conditions – Weather can be unpredictable, and you’ll want to be comfortable and ready for anything. Pack for both warm and cold weather, and don’t forget rain gear and sturdy footwear.
  • Eclipse Glasses are a Must – Never look directly at the sun without certified eclipse glasses. Ensure you have enough for everyone in your travel party. These special glasses will protect your eyes during the partial phases of the eclipse. We bought an Eclipse Glasses 4 Pack from Amazon.
  • Practice Your Photography – If you’re planning to capture the eclipse, practice photographing the sun (with the proper filters) and familiarize yourself with your camera settings before the big day. You can find a lens for your smartphone or your telescope. Remember, the totality phase can be photographed without filters.
  • Arrive Early – Traffic jams are expected in the days leading up to the eclipse. Plan to arrive at your viewing location at least a day or two in advance to avoid the rush and to scout out the perfect spot for your viewing experience. Local Emergency Management agencies have been warning about the influx of people for the eclipse for months, so be prepared for delays.
  • Stay Connected – Keep an eye on local news and weather forecasts, and stay informed about any changes related to the eclipse. Download relevant apps that can provide updates and educational content about the eclipse. Remember, certain areas along the path are expecting a massive influx of visitors. Oftentimes cell phone towers can’t handle that many people trying to use their phones at once.
  • Leave No Trace – As always, respect the natural environment of your viewing location. If you can carry it in, you can carry it out (and maybe a few additional pieces found along the way too). Dispose of waste properly, and leave your spot as pristine as you found it.
  • Enjoying the Moment – Above all, the most important tip is to immerse yourself fully in the experience. The total solar eclipse is a rare and profound event that deserves your undivided attention. Share the moment with loved ones, make new friends with fellow eclipse chasers, and let the awe of the cosmos inspire you.
